Before I had kids I never quite understood why parents seemed to plan their whole vacation around their children, without thinking much about themselves - but NOW I do... You start looking at the world through your children’s eyes, and when the kids are happy, you are happy and relaxed at the same time!
During the planning process we were seeking something all–inclusive, fun, special, fulfilling, memorable and relaxing, and Club Med Ixtapa turned out to be paradise on earth for our family vacation getaway. Everything went smoothly from the time we arrived at Zihuatanejo airport and the Club Med representative greeted us outside of customs.
We stayed in the “Suite section” of the resort; therefore, we had a private transfer to the property and a personal greeting at the designated check-in lounge/concierge desk, where we were explained the logistics of the resort, daily programs, services, etc.
The suite section provides guests even more added amenities, such as a private beach section, priority booking at the specialty restaurant, turn down services, etc.
Our family suite was beautiful and spacious. Club Med has the so called “baby welcome,” where they have a stroller, a crib, changing pad and bottle warmer waiting for you upon arrival. No need for you to take all these things from home -- thank you very much!
We started exploring the resort right away. It has a tropical and lush atmosphere, and it's easy to walk and find your way around.
The main restaurant, “El Encanto,” was fabulous, offering a great selection and quality of food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Even for picky kids you will have no trouble finding something they would like.
One night we tried out the resort’s speciality restaurant, “Le Luna Azul,” which sits up on a hill on one side of the resort. Beautiful open setting with ocean view and again, great food!
For late morning and afternoon snacks the “Miramar” was a good choice.
Club Med's four different kids clubs (based on kids ages) are amazing. They offer morning to evening indoor and outdoor programs. I took my son on the first day, and he was overly excited to meet his new friends. Picking him up was never an easy task as he did not want to leave his newly found heaven on earth.
On the second day my son already knew everybody by name, and everybody knew him. He was guiding us through the property as if he was the “King of the Resort”.
The attention the staff pays to the kids is truly special – building sandcastles on the beach and the adventurous pirate treasure hunt were my son's favorite activities.
During our stay I had a chance to look at all the different room types -- the family rooms and suites are really spacious and comfortable. I enjoyed the suite section with the added amenities and privacy, located at a more remote location of the resort. For couples I would highly recommend the Sea View Suite/Couples Suite, which has a beautiful set up and very large terrace.
The beach throughout the resort is fabulous. Lounge chairs and cabanas are available on a first come-first served basis.
The ocean seemed to be calmer at the main resort side. On the suites side I found the water more rough, swimming and snorkeling truly at your own risk.
As for activities to keep you engaged and entertained, there is a great variety from tennis, trapeze, archery, basketball, soccer, non-motorized motorsports, family pool, kids pool and much more.
The nightly shows were fun, and we were sad to miss the resort's “white night,” an outdoor dinner experience which takes place once a week.
We were fortunate enough to experience a “baby turtle release” on one of the nights. These babies hatched one morning at the resort and were safley released into the ocean, a true highlight of our vacation.
We got so comfortable during our stay, that it was heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time to see my kids saying goodbye to the staff. Hugs all around…. Pepe, Alan and Marifer, you were their heroes and I am sure they’ll remember you when we come back one day.
Attention parents – After your first stay, you may find youself going back to the resort every year as your kids will want to, no doubt.
