Discovering Martha's Vineyard

Josefine Loewenberg visits Martha's Vineyard
Body:
Martha's Vineyard is beautiful, picturesque, manicured and picture book perfect. With elegant inns, great restaurants, excellent seafood, nice beaches (cold Atlantic Ocean), it is the playground of the established, sophisticated rich and famous. We were there in summer and it was hot (85 degrees).

Edgartown is bustling with tourists. Vineyard Heaven, where we are stayed, is more intimate and less crowded. Down island is more remote with sand dunes, great hiking and biking trails, boating, historic lighthouses and little fishing villages, that have multi-million dollar beach cottages. Martha's Vineyard is understated.

We had our 30th wedding anniversary dinner at an elegant small luxury New England-style inn, "Lambert's Cove," with gorgeous grounds, a private beach, access to a large pond, and parking for four cars. Lambert's Cove has 14 rooms and suites and is furnished with antiques. It is elegant, a home away from home. They have their own organic vegetable garden, chickens for eggs and poultry, goats for milk and cheese. I had the best risotto and lobster ever, along with a Belgian chocolate cake with fresh berries to die for. Our server had an MA in Education and Psychology, spending summers with her parents in MV.

We also stayed at my Beverly Hills hair stylist's Inn, "Charles and Charles" in Vineyard Heaven. Lovely, comfortable, great detail of interior design, Frette linens and towels, complimentary bikes and heavenly beds. Beautiful garden and pool. Jefferson (my hair stylist's husband, who manages the Inn) makes the most amazing breakfasts: Brie and papaya quesadilla with fresh berries, home baked cherry scones or root vegetable hash with sunny side up egg, watermelon and berries and apple cinnamon shortbread accompanied by fresh orange and berries juice and excellent cappuccino.

We made an early dinner stop one evening at Menemsha, a fishing village, bought fresh lobster at Larsen's Fish Market and ate it on the beach with a bottle of Schramsberg Champagne, our welcome amenity from Charles and Charles.

Martha's Vineyard is the perfect place for a special occasion celebration on the East Coast!
