Geiranger, Norway and Oceania Insignia

I am sailing the Lands Of The Midnight Sun onboard Oceania Cruise Line’s Insignia, a wonderful boutique luxury cruise ship.

Considered by most to be the most picturesque of all Norway’s fjords, Geiranger is spectacular. Imagine a place with rock walls extending out above the sea 1000 feet, covered at the top with glaciers with waterfalls cascading down the sides. At the end of this 63-mile long canyon you arrive at the town of Geiranger.

Nested in a small cove, you can walk through the entire town in a short time, but it’s the scenery, which will astound you.  While I was there I rented a kayak from the small rental location, about a 5-minute walk from where you get off your ship’s tender. From here you can kayak right up to the seven-sisters waterfalls or any of the other sights in the area, the water is almost glass smooth, so the paddling is quite easy.

Oceania offered wonderful excursions traveling across the entire fjord over to the town of Hellesylt, where the ship arrived to pick them up – I have heard nothing other than how wonderful the journey was.

Make sure you are out on deck for the sail both into and later back out of the fjord; it will be a cruise vacation highlight.
