On tour in Kenya on an African safari

Flying into Nairobi at 4am seemed kinda crazy, but it was great….we were met and whisked off to the Norfolk Hotel and in bed by 5am…traffic is nasty in Nairobi so getting in at 4am was a breeze…Norfolk was fabulous after Fairmont did it up beautifully.

Micato Tours, one of the suppliers we use in East Africa, has a resident liaison at the hotel so we were always looked after, if only just to go to a museum on our own the first day. Our safari digs were superb and our tour guide who never left us. He was so knowledgeable and such a charming man: full of interesting conversation and fine sense of humor, as well as giving us a fabulous insight into Kenya/Africa…..We stayed at the following places in the bush:

Amboseli, Tortilis- a lovely small tented camp with a view of Mt Kilimanjaro. Lovely couple runs it and makes it feel like home. Tent is very eco-friendly and well done. Food was very good. Micato uses their own safari vehicles here and it is great…I like the pop-up roof enclosed cars like Micato’s better than the open air vehicles. They have a fabulous family tent: spacious 2 bedroom, 2 bath shared living space in the center with the view..really excellent. Animal viewing was excellent

Loisaba in Laikipia (pronouned lye-KEEP-ya) Plateau- It was truly over the top; the terrain here is much denser and the accommodations are set atop a hill over a valley. It is formerly a home that has 7 rooms on property, as well as a house for rent that is extraordinary (sleeps 4), and a property with sleeping for 6-8, self contained. All properties will take care of you superbly…the main property where we stayed was a touch of colonialism with its luxury and clientele…with different terrain they offer camel riding in the bush, 4×4 riding, star beds (sleeping out in the open with nets and protection above the ground in a snazzy place with dinner), use of their vehicles, bush walks, and probably anything else you want….it was marvy.

Fairmont Masa Safari Club-truly lovely tented cabin on a large property with 50 cabins. Main lodge for eating and viewing of the Mara River and the hippos!! Great viewing! Offers mostly game rides 2x per day and we got a walk in the bush one morning….a lovely setting with Fairmont casual elegance.

Micato, one of our preferred African safari suppliers, did it all for us…gifts every night on the pillow, always in touch with the planes to know when we would fly out of each place, flexible, and just plain great to be in their hands. Highly recommended and of course, we can make your East Africa travel arrangements.
