YOU CAN NOW FIND THE JOY OF A VIKING CRUISE ON THE UNITED STATES’ MOST FAMOUS RIVER: THE MIGHTY MISSISSIPPI.
Traversing over 1,000 miles and 10 states, Viking’s Mississippi River itineraries offer its cruisers a look at the nature, history, and culture of this part of America. Travelers will see tiny towns and big cities over the course of eight- to 15-day sailings.
Viking’s voyages on the Mississippi are designed for the curious vacationer. Cruisers have shore excursion options in these American ports, while the onboard experience is inspired by Scandinavian design. That means modern, comfortable, and light-filled spaces. But staying on the ship isn’t all Scandinavian; you can expect regional food on the menu, so you can explore the Mississippi River without going to land. The shiny ribbon on this whole package is the thoughtful service that’s synonymous with the Viking brand.
History was briefly mentioned before, but it deserves much more than being briefly mentioned. Through shore excursions, you can learn about bygone machinery at the John Deere Pavilion, mix historic cocktails, visit a family-owned and -run dairy farm, explore one of the nation’s oldest breweries, create art with a local artist, and become educated about Cajun culture at the Rural Life Museum. And there’s more where that came from.
The 450-foot-long ship, named the Viking Mississippi and debuting in Aug. 2022, has 193 staterooms and 147 crew, and it can hold up to 386 guests. Travelers have a choice of seven room types, the smallest of which is 268 square feet. Every room is exterior-facing, and most come with private veranda balconies. Viking bathrooms come with deluxe amenities, namely heated floors and anti-fog mirrors.
Guests have four itineraries to choose from, three of which are eight-day trips. The only 15-day trip, called “America’s Great River,” begins in St. Paul, Minn., and ends in New Orleans. “America’s Heartland” explores the river from St. Louis to St. Paul, Minn.; “Heart of the Delta” cruises from New Orleans to Memphis, Tenn.; and “Southern Celebration” begins and ends in New Orleans.
