With the island’s colonial background, the capital Roseau features both historic and modern buildings. Built in 1816, Gun Hill Signal Station is the finest of several signal stations on the island. The white limestone lion behind the garrison is a well-known landmark. Barbados boasts excellent golf courses. A wide range of watersports is available at hotels and special watersports centers.

In addition to being site of France's satellite launching base, French Guiana is perhaps best known for the infamous penal colony to which convicts and undesirables were deported from France. For a long time the small archipelago (the Safety Islands) was known by the name of "Devil's Island." The three islands - Devil's Island, Ile Royale and Ile St. Joseph - are about one hour by boat from the mainland. Their notorious convict settlements were built in 1852. On the almost inaccessible Devil's Island, political prisoners like Alfred Dreyfus were held in isolation. The prisoner who became most famous was doubtless Henri Charrière, who was immortalized in the movie "Papillon" for supposedly being the only convict who managed to escape from "the Green Hell." Of 80,000 prisoners sent to the islands, some 50,000 died here. Visit the prison ruins or the Kourou Space Centre.

Belem is located 60 miles from the Para River entrance to the Amazon Delta. Amid the broad avenues and busy markets of this, Brazil's chief port of the lower Amazon River, there remain many intriguing reminders of how thousands of tons of rubber were once loaded for transit here to the markets of the 19th Century. One of the most attractive cities in South America, Belém has numerous public squares and well-paved streets, many of which extend to the edge of the jungle. The cultural centre of northern Brazil, Belém is the site of the Federal University of Pará (1957) and the Goeldi Museum, with its world-famous Amazonian ethnological and zoological collections.

Fortaleza is one of Brazil's major cities with a colorful harbor area and a colonial history dating back to 1612. It has developed around the ancient fortress of Our Lady of Assumption. There's much to enjoy in its old center, where visitors can bargain in the market for embroidery, lace and other local handicrafts. In recent times, the city has made attempts to expand the tourist trade and to encourage the construction of luxury hotels along the city's fine beaches.

Salvador is a dynamic collage of diverse religious and cultural groups, colorful open-air markets, tropical flowers, majestic colonial buildings, golden-sand beaches and the bubbling sensuality of the Bahian people. Visit the Sao Francisco Chapel, whose interior is paved with gold. Sample Salvador's Afro-Brazilian cuisine, including such mouth-watering specialties as "ensopada" (seafood poached in fresh coconut milk) and "vatapa" (spicy fresh shrimp).
