It's Complicated
CNN Legal Analyst, Renato Mariotti, and Assistant Dean and Senior Lecturer at Yale University’s Jackson School of Global Affairs, Asha Rangappa, team together and take to the sea. In their ongoing podcast series, It’s Complicated., they dive deeper into complicated legal issues in the news. Read more about these cruise hosts.
Renato Mariotti
Renato Mariotti is a former federal prosecutor, legal analyst, and partner at Paul Hastings LLP who litigates, tries cases, and defends individuals and companies who are under government investigation.
After graduating from the University of Chicago and Yale Law School, Renato clerked on the U.S. Court of Appeals and worked as a litigation attorney before returning to Chicago where he spent over nine years as a federal prosecutor, investigating and prosecuting hundreds of cases in a wide variety of areas including child exploitation, human trafficking, cybercrime, gun trafficking, tax evasion, fraud, obstruction of justice, public corruption, narcotics trafficking, and more.
As a federal prosecutor, he was best known as the first person in the nation to prosecute a high-frequency trader under a special provision of the Dodd-Frank Act. It was a landmark case that signaled a sea change in the government’s ability to enforce securities regulations in the era of computer-aided trading.
Renato has been a CNN legal analyst and appears regularly on MSNBC, CNN, CNBC, ABC News, and PBS. He has been quoted in The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Time magazine and The Washington Post. He was the Legal Affairs Columnist for POLITICO Magazine and has written for publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post and Time Magazine.
Asha Rangappa
Asha Rangappa is an Assistant Dean and Senior Lecturer at the Yale University’s Jackson School of Global Affairs and a former Associate Dean at Yale Law School.
Prior to her current position, Asha served as a Special Agent in the New York Division of the FBI, specializing in counterintelligence investigations. At Yale, she teaches courses on national security law, Russian information warfare, and leadership and ethics. She the author of The Freedom Academy, a bestselling online Substack publication about disinformation and its impact on democracy, and also co-hosts the legal podcast, It’s Complicated, with Renato Mariotti.
Asha graduated cum laude from the School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University and was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study constitutional reform and U.S. drug policy in Bogotá, Colombia. She received her law degree from Yale Law School where she was a Coker Fellow in constitutional law, and served as a law clerk to the Honorable Juan R. Torruella on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She is legal contributor for ABC News, an editor for Just Security, a member of the Council of Foreign Relations, and a Security Fellow with the Truman National Security Project.
Head to the top of the famed Space Needle, enjoy the performers in Pioneer Square, watch fish-tossing in legendary Pike Place Market or spend the afternoon in the impressive Seattle Art Museum. Take in the groovy Experience Music Project or the fascinating Pacific Science Center. Dive into the sea at the Seattle Aquarium or take to the skies at the Museum of Flight.
Totem poles are one of Ketchikan’s chief attractions, and the best places to view them are Saxman Village and Totem Bight State Park. Drop by the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center to learn about the local cultures and ecosystems.
Called “Shee Atika” by the Tlingit Indians, then “New Archangel” by the Russians who ousted them, Sitka boasts a multicultural heritage. Two dozen of its attractions are on the National Register of Historic Places, including Castle Hill and Building 29, a structure built by the Russians in 1835. The Sheldon Jackson Museum exhibits one of Alaska’s oldest native culture collections.
Hoonah means “where the north wind doesn’t blow” in the language of the Tlingit Indians, who make up about 70% of the population of this village on the lee side of Chichagof Island. However, wildlife outnumbers everyone, so watch for bears, eagles and humpback whales, which migrate here in the summer.
For a state capital, Juneau maintains a surprising small-town charm, in part because it can only be reached by sea or air due to the surrounding wilderness. Collections from the indigenous people are displayed in the Alaska State Museum. Visit Mendenhall Glacier for outdoor adventure.
Once a Tlingit Indian stronghold, then a Russian outpost, and finally an American settlement in 1867, Wrangell has endured dramatic change and honors it. See a preserved tribal house on Chief Shakes Island. Learn about the three gold rushes that transformed the area in the Wrangell Museum. Behold the ancient petroglyphs carved into the rocks on the nearby beaches.
Western Canada’s oldest city, Victoria proudly displays its British heritage. Explore lavish Craigdarroch Castle, built in the late 1800s for a Scottish coal baron. Trace the area’s early British seafarers in the Marine Museum of British Columbia. There’s even a Royal London Wax Museum with likenesses of King Henry VIII and Winston Churchill.
By far the largest port on our Alaska cruises, Vancouver offers every imaginable big-city attraction. Explore the Museum of Anthropology and the Vancouver Art Museum for culture. History flourishes in the Gastown district, which borders vibrant Chinatown. Or enjoy a break from the bustle in Stanley Park, one of North America’s largest urban parks.
