Regal Serenity at The Dhara Dhevi, Chiang Mai
It feels a little unfair to talk about this place because a massive fire broke out in April 2025 and destroyed the property, but at the same time I would love to put it on the radar of travelers because it is currently undergoing a major renovation and refurbishment. That being said, I found a hidden gem in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Chiang Mai is probably overlooked by many because it’s the opposite of the hustle and bustle you will find in a city like Bangkok. It’s the perfect place to sit and sip tea in the mountains and enjoy nature or people watch.
I had a traditional Thai massage at the gorgeous Dhara Dhevi Hotel. Imagine a storybook setting of teak villas, rice paddies, lotus ponds, and ornate spires. The hotel focuses on wellness, artistry, and mindful living. You can take a series of cooking classes, enjoy Ayurvedic spa treatments, participate in meditation sessions, or enjoy traditional dance performances, so it was the perfect example to show that luxury and authenticity can coexist without going over the top. It was incredibly special because everything about it was traditional and unlike any other massage treatment. Every detail was exceptional and nothing felt rushed.
If you have never had a traditional Thai massage, then it should be noted in advance that they are not soft and smooth. For many, they hurt, as they are unprepared for the pressing, pulling, and stretching movements that will occur to relax the muscles and tendons. The stretching is assisted, so think yoga with assistance to manipulate the body into positions you may not be able to do naturally. Oh and the best part? The practitioners will use not only their hands, but also their elbows, knees, and even feet to move and stretch you. As with anytime you use muscles you forgot you had, you may experience a bit of soreness right afterwards, but unlike that creak you’ll get in your neck from sleeping wrong, that soreness won’t last long. On the contrast, you will end up feeling incredible for days.
I was welcomed with traditional tea into a beautifully decorated room and the treatment started with a rose petal foot soak. I later learned that this helps relieve tension and improve circulation in addition to creating a sensory atmosphere of calmness. Perhaps that is why I felt more relaxed for the massage. That calmness remained throughout my entire trip and I have to say Thai culture has such a warm, hospitable spirit that makes you feel instantly at ease. The genuine kindness and respect they show to others is woven into every aspect of life, which made this massage so much more memorable! I think it’s always a highlight to immerse yourself in the cultural practices of a place you’re visiting. Would I return? Absolutely, and it should be noted that the hotel plans to be finished with renovations at the end of 2025 so add that to your bucket list and in the meantime, be inspired by other treasures to be found Away From the Crowds!
