Rome: The Ides of March, Rooftop Bars, & Escapes to Umbria

Rome and its surrounding regions offer a beautiful tapestry of history, luxury, and culture. Whether exploring the heart of the Eternal City or uncovering hidden gems in Umbria, every moment promises to be unforgettable. On my last trip to the ancient city, I ventured into new eateries, explored new places to stay, and even tried out a transportation option I had yet to test. I am pleased to share my insights and experiences that will make your next visit to Rome all the more memorable.

Arriving in Rome is always thrilling. This time, I was curious to see what the Leonardo Express train at the airport had in store for myself and fellow travelers. The train was a delightful surprise; I would recommend it especially for solo travelers and young couples. The Leonardo Express takes you directly to Rome’s city center in just 32 minutes. Tickets range from 4 to 18 euros per person (a taxi will typically run you around 48 euros) and the trains depart every 15-30 minutes. Purchasing tickets was straightforward, even during the busy month of March. With long taxi queues, the train provided a peaceful and efficient option. This is an excellent choice for those who value peace of mind and a touch of adventure.

My first stay was at the newly opened InterContinental Rome Ambasciatori Palace on Via Veneto. Since its grand opening in May 2023, the hotel has made quite the impression on visitors. It offers 160 rooms, a stunning rooftop bar, and even boasts a Michelin-starred chef who hails from Sicily. The details are luxurious, and even my entry-level room featured a charming Juliette balcony. Even as a newer hotel in an ancient city, it has quickly become a premier destination for luxury travelers.

For my next stay, I arrived at the Sina Bernini Bristol. This hotel is a fantastic value with its central location, making it easy to explore Rome’s iconic landmarks. It is also celebrating over 150 years in Rome! With 167 rooms, a fabulous rooftop bar (always a favorite of mine, if you haven’t noticed yet), and a delightful restaurant, I recommend opting for a higher category room to really get the most out your experience here.

As for experiencing the city itself, exploring Rome is best done with a knowledgeable guide. While in town, I tried several tours through Viator Tours. They have a reputation for quality and I certainly experienced as much. Ideal for travelers seeking four-star experiences, Viator’s tours are well-reviewed and thoughtfully curated. I enjoyed a food tour that included wine tasting and stopping for various delicious eats, including authentic Roman pizza. The Colosseum and Vatican tours were also comprehensive and insightful. While Viator’s offerings are excellent, those seeking more private, in-depth experiences might consider other options. Overall, I was impressed with their professionalism and quality.

A unique highlight from my trip was visiting Rome during the Ides of March on March 15th, the anniversary of Julius Caesar’s death. An independent group from across Italy re-enacts scenes from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, culminating their performances at the forum where Caesar was buried. This theatrical tribute is a must-see for history buffs and Shakespeare enthusiasts alike, bringing to life such renowned moments of Italian history in a city already humming with ancient memories and heritage.

After soaking in Rome’s splendor, I ventured up north into the Umbria region. With its blend of medieval and Roman history, this charming stop is worth a day trip. While it might not warrant a lengthy stay, its unique attractions make it a fascinating detour. I stayed in the capital of the region, Perugia, at the Sina Brufani hotel. One of my favorite unique features of the hotel was its pool that included a viewing window to an archaeological site below. Perugia’s rich history and quaint charm make it a delightful addition to any itinerary.

From my travels by train, stays in both modern and historic Roman hotels, memorable food and history tours, and diversion to the fascinating town of Perugia in Umbria, I most definitely had a full, Italian experience. For those seeking a luxurious yet authentic Italian adventure, these destinations will not disappoint.
