Be Aware of the New Tax When Staying in Italy

If touring Europe includes a visit to Italy, and specifically Venice, be aware that the city is scheduled to introduce a tourist tax next month, effective July 1st.

The tax is expected to earn the city €20m a year to be spent on vital restoration work. Mayors of the Veneto region have approved the accommodation tax. While the tax must yet be approved by the Venice Council, this seems like a formality at this point.

Those that have visited Venice know what a treasure this city is, and it’s without a doubt it needs to invest in restoration to preserve it. The new visitor tax, which will apply to all everyone aged 10 and over, is similar to the one proposed for Florence. The tax will be calculated at €1 per person, per night, per star of hotel category up to a maximum of five nights.

(So, for example, for someone spending 3 nights at a 5-star hotel, their tax would be €15.)

In the low season, from November to February, the tax is expected to be lowered and non four and five-star hotels on the mainland and smaller islands will be charged less.
