Soaking Up the Soul of Getsemaní, Cartagena

While in Cartagena, Colombia, the best place to spend a day is the neighborhood of Getsemaní. As a vibrant and culturally rich neighborhood, it’s a place where history, art, and local life collide in a colorful way. This district is filled with local art, street musicians, spontaneous dancers, and so many photo opportunities. What was once a working-class district outside of the colonial walled city, is now a buzzing hub of creativity while still retaining it’s classic charm.

For foodies there is everything from street food to pizzerias, to casual bistros, upscale elegant restaurants, to breweries and salsa bars. You’ll find everything from local cafés, rooftop bars, boutique hotels, and art galleries mixed in with family homes. Narrow cobblestone streets are lined with beautiful buildings decorated with murals depicting the historical past and an Afro-Caribbean heritage. Make sure you have on great walking shoes because every street is a feast for the eyes.

In the evenings, Plaza de la Trinidad becomes the beating heart of the neighborhood, filled with street performers, food vendors, and locals mingling with curious travelers. You’ll also be treated to live music, impromptu salsa dancing, and food carts featuring some flavorful items that I’m sure were reserved just for the evening crowd. In other words, don’t plan to get much sleep if you only come here for one day! Unlike the more polished areas of Cartagena, Getsemaní feels raw, real, and incredibly alive. It’s a neighborhood where you don’t just observe the culture, you become part of it.

Magical and unique, this authentic area is not to be missed. Tune in for my next adventure, Away From the Crowds!
