U.K. Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA): What Is It and Why Do You Need One?

Apr 02, 2026 Avatar TravelStore

Planning a trip to Europe or the UK this year? Take a beat before you board the plane and make sure you have completed the new entry requirement that applies to nearly all U.S. citizens as of April 2026.

Don’t worry: the ETA process is quick, easy, and relatively inexpensive at £16 per person.

What is the new U.K. Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)?

The U.K. has introduced the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enhance border security by requiring travelers to submit information in advance of travel. The good news is applications are:

  • Fully digital (via mobile app or online)
  • Linked directly to the traveler’s passport
  • Based on passport and biometric information, plus security questions

Who needs to get an ETA?

Plain and simple: You. The ETA applies to travelers from countries that previously did not require a visa to enter the U.K., including: The United States, most European countries (excluding Ireland), and countries such as Australia, Japan, and Singapore. It is not required for British passport holders, Irish passport holders, or individuals with U.K. visas or residency permissions.

“I didn’t know about the ETA and I leave next week! What do I do?”

Luckily, ETA applications are very easy to complete and are typically processed within three working days. Once completed, you don’t need to print anything out or show any additional paperwork at the border; the ETA is associated with your passport.

You also do not need to reapply each time you go to the U.K. as the ETA is valid for multiple visits over a 24-month period and covers visits of up to 6 months (tourism, business, short-term study). But, a new ETA is required if your passport changes.

What an ETA does NOT allow:

Please note the new ETA requirement is not a blank check for all types of travel and specifically excludes:

  • Staying longer than 6 months
  • Working (paid or unpaid), unless specifically permitted
  • Accessing public benefits
  • Using repeat visits to live in the U.K.

In short, there is no need to panic over the new entry requirement to travel to the U.K. The Electronic Travel Authorization is easy to procure and the turnaround time is typically very fast. Once completed and approved, your passport is associated with your authorization. Contact your travel advisor if you have additional questions regarding this new procedure. Bon voyage!
