Since the 4th century, underground tunnels and chambers have been carved from the volcanic rock below the city of Naples, first by the Greeks and later by the Romans. There was even underground farming tried and a theater where Nero held operatic performances. Today there are some 280 miles of subterranean pathways below the city, which can be visited with a guide.
