Nilometer
Old Cairo, Egypt
The Nile has been a critical resource for life in Egypt. The nilometer was a device invented to measure the river’s levels and ebb and flows, especially during the annual flooding. On Rhoda Island in Old Cairo is a nilometer, a tall column partially submerged with an interior stairway on which the river’s levels could be notated.
