Gibraltar is a British overseas territory. It is located on the south of the Iberian Peninsula, overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar which links the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. The territory shares a land border with Spain to the North. Gibraltar has historically been an important base for the British Armed Forces and is the site of a British naval base.
The name of the Territory is a Spanish corruption of the original Arabic name Jabal al-Tariq meaning "mountain of Tariq". It refers to the Berber Umayyad general Tariq ibn-Ziyad, who led the Moorish invasion of Iberia in 711. Earlier, it was known as Calpe, one of the Pillars of Hercules. Today, Gibraltar is known colloquially as "Gib" or "the Rock".
We commence the Tour proceeding South towards Europa Point, travelling past the American War Memorial, the Royal Navy Headquarters and Trafalgar Cemetery to reach Europa Point, the Southernmost point and the site of the Trinity lighthouse.
Here you alight from your transport to take some photographs of the panoramic views of the busiest shipping lane in the world, the mingling of the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean and two Continents.
The tour then proceeds to the upper Rock area, which has been designated a Nature Reserve, and our first stop is St. Michael's Cave. Here one can appreciate a mass of strangely shaped stalagmites and stalactites. The strains of classical music drift through this enormous Gothic style cavern.
We continue towards the Den of Gibraltar's most respected residents, the "infamous Rock Apes" A pack of free roaming Barbary Tail-less monkeys (Macaques sylvanus). They are endearing creatures with a penchant for handbags to say nothing of cameras and hats. Please note they are animals and are not to be touched however friendly they may seem.
After taking photographs of the antics of the Apes, the tour will follow the road within the upper rock to exit the Nature Reserve at the foot of the Moorish Castle and the tower of Homage that still bears the scars of Battle. Finally we enter the upper Town area and drive down the narrow winding roads to exit at Main Street for some shopping time.
