Your journey begins departing from the pier with a panoramic view of the city and the famous Strait of Magellan from the La Cruz Hill vantage point.  Receive an informative and interesting lecture on the city and the region while admiring your surroundings.  Travel towards the Maggiorino Borgatello Museum, driving along the main avenues and knowing a little more of the city.  The Museum is kept by the Salesian friars and exhibits four levels of a magnificent ethnographic collection showing the region´s native people – Aonikenk, Selk’nam, Yamanas and Kaweskar. It also boasts information about the regional fauna and mineralogy as well as the Antarctica.  Afterwards, continue to the cemetery with its beautiful gardens and huge cypress trees.  You will see splendid mausoleums of pioneer families as well as a gravestone to the last Onas, where the extinguished Tierra del Fuego natives are buried.  Next visit the Patagonian Institute boasting a collection of old local cars and replicas of pioneer houses from 1880 to 1900; it also exhibits historical pictures of Punta Arenas dating back to 1905.

The last stop is at the Plaza de Armas Square, where you can take a look at the Hernando de Magallanes monument. Tradition has it that the visitor who kisses or rubs the toe of the Indian sitting at the foot of the statue will surely come back to Punta Arenas, if that is your wish, a chance to discover if this tradition is true or not.  There is a small handicraft market on the square where you can purchase regional souvenirs. Right across the Plaza find the Union Club, one of the most beautiful mansions built at the start of the 20th century by rich cattle ranchers.

Note: Museum Maggiorino Borgatello does not have an elevator and there is a long flight of stairs to reach each level.

Kayaking on the Strait of the Magellan (04:00 hours)
The Strait of Magellan was discovered in 1520 by the Portuguese navigator, Fernando de Magallanes. It is the most important natural passageway between the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans, located south of South American mainland and north of Tierra del Fuego. It is considered a difficult route to navigate because of the unpredictable winds, sea currents and its narrowness. Punta Arenas sits alongside the Strait but at a wider point where waters are calmer and where a sea kayaking adventure can be enjoyed with Tierra del Fuego Island on the background.

The tour takes around 27 kms long from pier to Agua Fresca Bay, where equipment is received: two-piece dry suit and the first guidance. Afterwards, the participants are taken to Santa Maria River where the local guide a short briefing about how to use the double kayaks and to paddle in tandem, along with safety instructions. Once done it’s possible to start an exciting journey of about 1:30 hour kayaking on the Strait of Magellan. During the navigation some seabirds can be seen and, if lucky, some friendly dolphins might even accompany the tourists. At the end of the activity, the participants are taken back to Agua Fresca Hosteria, to take off the dry suite. Later, a pleasant moment is enjoyed sharing experiences with the other participants while having a delicious snack.
